'For the Garden' of St. Louis, Missouri was a Top Ten winner in the 2006 Perennials Marketing Contest, sponsored by Plant Publicity Holland, the Perennial Plant Association and Branch Smith publishing.

In the words of garden center president, Marsha Haefner, "Planting perennials in a garden can be as easy and enjoyable as coloring when you were young! That's the inspiration that resulted in our 'Color Your Garden' display."

Marsha wanted to accomplish several objectives by using this theme.

Nothing says fun and creativity like a kid's crayons. Perennials have just about the same limitless color range and are equally pleasurable to work with in the garden.
First and foremost she wanted to show customers that planning, and planting perennials doesn't have to be a complicated, intimidating experience. "One doesn't have to know Latin, or be able to pronounce long, unfamiliar words in order to have fun in the garden," said Marsha. "Perennials, when planted where they will be happy - sun, shade, etc. - are easy and one of the most enjoyable aspects of the whole gardening experience."

Ms. Haefner also wanted to relate perennial gardening and creativity in an uncomplicated way. "Remember being young and coloring a 'masterpiece' that you were proud of? In the same, simple way, gardening with perennials can be just as gratifying. It's like coloring for grown-ups, and you don't even have to stay inside the lines. Hopefully, it's a concept that will appeal to all ages."

"One of the greatest challenges we face as garden center owners is sparking the interest of the younger generation. They are the future of our business, and it is up to us to appeal to them. We need to keep the gardening process enjoyable so they will keep coming back for more. And, hopefully their kids will also think this looks like a lot of fun!"

"Wherever your little piece of the world is, perennials are the perfect choice to add color!"

We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

Congratulations.
