The theme of Waterloo Gardens Top Ten entry in the 2006 Perennials Marketing Contest, was "Fall Perennials... More than just Mums." Waterloo's intention was to excite and educate customers so that their gardens would reflect the wide variety of perennial plants available for autumn beauty and interest. "Waterloo's philosophy," said manager Heather Carlson, "is that a completed garden consists of several elements that may include trees, shrubs, perennials, containers and garden décor."

The garden center's large circular display garden consisted of three areas of focus, each containing distinctive plants and a decorative wrought iron feature. Centrally located, the display was a focal point visible from both perennial and nursery yards and the main exit to the outdoor departments. As well, it was an obvious destination from the indoor greenhouses.

Waterloo Gardens' circular perennial display. Something wonderful to discover around every corner and from every angle.
Shopping made easy. Everything customers need to replicate any part of the display is right there, ready to be put on the cart and taken home.
The circular form of the display garden invited customers to discover something new around each bend, as they searched for the perfect plant to add to their landscape. An arbor was the central focus of an area where the foliage of Hosta 'Paul's Glory' and Heuchera 'Amethyst Mist' combined with colorful yellow Chrysanthemums and Agastache 'Black Adder.' Knockout roses and Veronica 'Darwin's Blue' surrounded a bench backed by a heavily berried Pyracantha trellis, also adorned with Osmanthus 'Hakuro Nishiki' and Miscanthus 'Yaku Jima.' As the journey around the display continued, the focal point became a spectacular container full of surprise color and interesting combinations. Grasses, phlox, Ceratostigma, Crocosmia, Sedums, Solidago and Helianthemum lent to the magic.

Surrounding Waterloo's fall containers, the display was blanketed with Pennisetum, Ajuga, asters, Carex, Heuchera and Heucherella. Buddleia 'Ellen's Blue' and Eupatorium 'Gateway' added elements of height, texture, and color. Completing the story and in celebration of the season, pumpkins, gourds, and Indian corn adorned the arbor and benches.

We salute Waterloo Gardens for their creativity.
