Founded in 1965 in Hannover, Germany, the ISU is the international association of perennial plant growers and related professionals. Today, the organization has over 500 members in 17 European countries as well as the USA, Canada and Argentina.

The primary aims of the ISU are to:
  • Promote dialogue and information exchange - about cultivation, assortments, trade and the use of perennials - among perennial plant growers and users.
  • Trial perennials for purity of variety, ranges of use and garden suitability. Currently these three year trials are being conducted in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland.
  • Standardize the nomenclature of perennials. If, for example, nomenclature and the need for uniformity in the naming of cultivated plants is an area of particular interest to you, the ISU site has an up-to-date listing of 'Changes to Names of Perennials'. You'll find this information under Links/List of names of woody plants and perennials.

As well, the ISU holds bi-annual conferences, and has an internationally recognized award program for newly introduced perennials.
