2007 Perennials Marketing Contest Top Ten Winner
'Perennials Knocking on Your Door' is a series of living vignettes, each color coordinated to the color of a front or back door. It's a great way to showcase a variety of colorful perennials combined with shrubs and trees and demonstrate how easy it is to jazz up any home entrance. Nothing sells plants better than living displays, especially to customers who have difficulty imagining what various combinations might look like.
In our continuing series of profiles of the Top Ten winners of the 2007 Perennials Marketing contest, sponsored by Plant Publicity Holland and the Perennial Plant Association, this month's spotlight is on Sargent's Landscape Nursery in Rochester, MN.

"At Sargent's, top-notch customer service and quality plant material displayed beautifully are our priority," said Assistant Manager, Wendy Jasper.

"Over the last few years, our staff has attended numerous seminars on display techniques, gathering ideas and expertise to help us inspire our customers and add pizzazz to our sales lot," explained Wendy. "With just a few cans of bold paint and some unique props, we created our "Perennials Knocking on Your Door" display. We asked friends to help us hunt for antique chairs, doors, and windows in winter, painted them brilliant colors in spring, and then arranged them in quaint vignettes scattered throughout our perennial area during the summer."

The simulated front door-scapes sparked customers' imaginations with interesting plant combinations and also gave them visual aids regarding placement, color schemes and how to create interest using a variety of plant textures.

"We wove in short sections of painted fencing, birdbaths, edging materials, patio tables and even a large granite fountain for extra flair," explained Wendy. "Keeping in mind the wide variety of customers we serve, we designed displays featuring different color schemes and styles for front entryways. By pulling plants off our benches and showing customers how to group them in combination with trees and shrubs, we were delighted to showcase perennials in a brand new light at Sargent's."
