'Fall' in Love with Perennials |
|
Congratulations to Mori Gardens, Garden Design and Retail Centre from the picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario, Canada, a Top Ten Winner of the Perennials Marketing Contest for a second year in a row.
The Mori Gardens display, 'Fall' in Love with Perennials' is all about clever marketing, and creating a second season for perennial purchases. About the philosophy behind the display, Tonie Morie, owner of the garden center said, "As the gardening season was winding down, we wanted to create a display that could easily demonstrate the panoply of golds, reds and burgundys and exciting textures that perennials provide to the fall garden."
Visible from three sides, the perennial vignette was prominently displayed on a patio along the main walkway in the garden center right next to the perennial section. Waterproof cards with photos and detailed descriptions of the plants accompanied each perennial and vibrant posters gave customers innovative ideas for using varieties of Echinacea, Huchera and Sedum in the fall garden. "We also wanted to provide an imaginative way to market perennial fertilizers and soil amendments so the autumn-themed hay bales and scarecrow were perfect places around which to display them," continued Tonie.
Designed in September - so that late season customers were greeted with something new and exciting in the garden center - the display showcased an eye-catching selection of perennials that flower in the Fall, such as Echinacea 'Sundown', Summer Phlox and, who would have thought, Iris 'Smell the Roses'. Also on display were late season perennials with wonderful leaf color like Sedum 'Lidakense', plants with interesting seed heads such as Miscanthus 'Gracillimus' and those with terrific textures and warm autumn hues such as Heuchera 'Peach Flambé', Gold Chrysanthemum, Pensetmon and Coreopsis 'Moonbeam'.
Tonie concluded, "People tend to think of perennials only for a summer garden. This is proof that autumn is beautiful time of year to for the perennial garden. With this display we hope to make our customer 'Fall' in Love with Perennials.
