A 2007 Perennials Marketing Contest 'Top Ten'Bowood Farms, of St. Louis Missouri is one of the Top Ten Winners of the 2007 Perennials Marketing Contest, sponsored by Plant Publicity Holland and the Perennial Plant Association. Formerly a premium perennial wholesale provider to retail garden centers in St. Louis and beyond, Bowood decided to shift their focus in 2005. The goal of the John McPheeters family who own and operate Bowood Farms, was to create a garden center employing sustainable, organic, earth friendly practices and feature sensational perennials and companion plants in a more natural setting.
"Our displays change weekly with fresh color from the farm," said Ellen Barredo, Horticultural Manager of the garden center. "Perennials that are past their bloom period travel back to the farm on the empty delivery racks to be freshened and pampered for future sale." "Bowood's 'Blooming Beauties' are living P.O.P.," Ellen added. " But, just in case our customers aren't sure what they're looking at, each plant comes with a simple, waterproof, black and white plant tag printed with both the Latin and common name of the plant as well as its specific cultural information. The tag can be placed in the garden, along side the plant, so that everything one needs to know about it is easily accessible." And, just in case customers are reticent about asking for any particular plant they can't find, signage throughout the garden center promotes Bowood's 'Order Fresh from the Farm' service, in which healthy, out-of-bloom plants are shipped from the growing farm to the garden center every Thursday during the season. Bowood Farms has some terrific, yet simple, retailing concepts which we, at Plant Publicity Holland, are pleased to share with you in this forum. |
